Ayers Rock

26/01/09

Left Cairns just as it started to rain and a 3 hour flight later we were at Ayers Rock. We were welcomed with a blast of hot air as we got off the plane. Got to our campsite resort a short drive away and were told that due to tent maintenance we'd been given a free upgrade and were in an air conditioned cabin - reeeesult! Thank goodness, I don't think we'd have coped in the tent - it was VERY hot! The resort is made up of 4 hotels, our campsite and a small shopping centre. We got the bus to the shops and got some essentials - bread, milk and fly nets! Went for a swim in the warm pool at our camp site and floated amongst the insects before a shower and dinner. You can't see Ayers Rock from our resort so we went to one of the viewing points to watch the sunset and see Ayers Rock changing colour and losing its redness. To celebrate 'Australia Day' we went for a beer, a lemonade and a frozen cocktail! Not a lot going on so we headed back to our cabin, gazing at the millions of bright stars on our way back.

Up at 5.45am to watch the sun rise over Ayers Rock. It wasn't as pretty as we thought so we were a little disappointed, but its a good thing to say we've done. Went back to bed and stayed there until 10.30am - finally getting some sleep after worrying about getting up in time all night! Sat in the shade for a few hours, cooling off from the 40 degree temperatures with a dip in the pool. After lunch we headed to Ayers Rock. Walked around the base for about an hour, seeing a waterhole and some aboriginal art on the rock walls before getting the bus home 90 mins earlier than planned as there were just too many flies - they were disgusting, landing on our backs and head nets an some getting inside too - ggrrrrr. Hot and bothered, but having got some good pics of the red rock we jumped straight into the pool once we got back.
